Each winter, huge shoals of sardines move up the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, followed by dolphins, sharks and diving gannets. Exact timing depends on the sea; the run usually peaks between June and July.
Dive and boat operators from Umkomaas run trips when the shoals arrive. Ask the office to arrange one with your stay.
Planning your stay
- Getting there: Aliwal Shoal (dive launch, Umkomaas) is 23 km from Cabana Mio, about 20 minutes by road without traffic. On event days, leave early and allow extra time for parking and road closures.
- Suggested dates: arrive Monday, 31 May and leave Monday, 07 June, so the event day is free of travel.
- Weather in June: days average 24°C and nights 11°C, with about 2 rainy days in the month. The sea is around 23°C.
- Daylight: the sun rises about 6:50 and sets about 17:03 in mid-June.
- Tickets: buy them from the organiser or its official ticket outlet; Cabana Mio does not sell event tickets.
- Room for everyone: each chalet sleeps six in three bedrooms, with a kitchen and a private braai. Groups book chalets side by side.
