The rhino story

By the early 20th century only a small population of southern white rhino survived, in the iMfolozi area. Protection here, and later Operation Rhino, which moved rhino to parks across Africa from the 1960s, rebuilt the species. Both black and white rhino live in the park today.

The park is run by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and has all of the Big Five, plus giraffe, zebra, wild dog and a rich bird list.

Doing it in a day

It is about 273 km from the chalets, roughly three hours twenty on the N2. A day trip means leaving before dawn and returning after dark, so many guests book a guided tour that collects them, or spend a night near the park and come back to the beach.

Questions

Can I visit Hluhluwe-iMfolozi as a day trip from Durban?

Yes, but it is a long day: about 3 hours 20 minutes each way from Amanzimtoti. Guided tours or an overnight near the park are more relaxed.
