Inland from Durban the land falls away into a vast bowl of green hills, folded around the Mngeni River. The view from Botha's Hill is one of the classic sights of KwaZulu-Natal.

What to see

The Old Main Road between Hillcrest and Drummond follows the rim of the valley, with viewpoints, craft stalls, cafés and country restaurants along the way. In the valley below, many families still live in traditional Zulu homesteads.

Cultural villages and PheZulu Safari Park show Zulu dance and traditions, and the area is known for its crafts and beadwork. Comrades Marathon runners know the road well: Botha's Hill and Inchanga are two of the race's Big Five hills, and Arthur's Seat and the Wall of Honour are near Drummond.
