Float over the Tala valley as the sun comes up, with rhino and giraffe below. It means a very early start from the chalets, and it is worth it.

The flight

Hot Air Ballooning SA flies over the Tala valley in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as over the Drakensberg and Gauteng. Flights launch at first light, when the air is calmest, and are followed by the traditional champagne toast and breakfast.

Flights from about R3,000 per person shared (operator's website, October 2026). In 2022 children aged 5 to 11 flew at half price; ask when you book.

Weather decides

Every flight depends on wind and weather, and bookings are confirmed close to the day. Some KZN operators fly less in the windy late-winter months. Book early in your stay so there is room to move it.
