Durban Country Club is one of the great names of South African golf: a course among the coastal dunes that has hosted the South African Open more often than any other.

Built because the old course flooded

When floods made Durban's existing course unplayable for the 1920 South African championships, the city risked losing the event. A new course was built on the dunes by the sea, the land cleared largely by hand, and it opened on 9 December 1922. Colonel S.V. Hotchkin reworked it in 1928.

The club counts 17 South African Opens; Gary Player won his first here in 1956. The white Cape Dutch clubhouse dates from the 1920s.

The famous 3rd

The best-known hole is the par-five 3rd, where the tee shot drops into a valley between the dunes and the ocean wind decides much of what happens next.
