Umkomaas is one of the oldest courses in KwaZulu-Natal and one of the prettiest: the club says all but one of its holes look out over the warm Indian Ocean.

A course with history

Golf in Umkomaas began with nine holes in 1913; the club was constituted in 1922 and the course grew to 18 holes in 1926. Bob Grimsdell, the pioneer of South African course design, reworked it in the 1930s into the layout still played today.

PGA Tour winner Tim Clark, who won the 2010 Players Championship, learned his golf here.

How it plays

The course runs over undulating ground above the town and is not overly long. The club calls it a real test for low handicappers when the coastal wind blows, yet forgiving enough for the occasional golfer, which makes it a good choice for a mixed group.

The hardest hole for men is the 3rd (stroke index 1). Men play the 6th and 8th as par fives.
